MLA Webcast April 20 - Host site in Winston-Salem

The Novant Health Libraries will be a host site for the April 20, 2011
Medical Library Association (MLA) Webcast: "Shifting Skills to Navigate the
Changing Horizon". The webcast will be shown in the FMC Conference
Center located at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC.

This program will introduce emerging trends in biomedical research and
healthcare environments that present new opportunities for information
professionals in terms of partnership, collaboration, and support.
These include: translational science, e-science, and electronic health
records, all of which will offer new and expanded roles for information
professionals in the management, sharing and integration of data; with
respect to new models for scholarly publication; as well as exploring
new ways to collaborate with Clinical and Translational Science Award
centers and their constituents. All provide new opportunities to help
educate health and information technology professionals in the
meaningful use of health information via electronic health record
systems.

Sara Aull Student Paper Award 2010

The NCSLA sponsored Sara Aull Student Paper Award was presented to Chris Doty of UNC-Chapel Hill during the NCSLA annual banquet in December 2010. This annual award is given to a North Carolina library science graduate student who has written a paper of publishable quality relating to special libraries. Doty was awarded $1,000 for his paper entitled Influences of Anticipated Citation Counts and Author-Fees on the Attitudes of Tenure-Track Science Faculty toward Open Access Journals.

Doty’s paper explores what factors influence UNC biology and chemistry faculty to choose where to send their manuscripts for publication. The paper also explores faculty’s publishing decisions based on their expectation of increased citations. Doty’s goal was to find successful strategies to market Open Access to biomedical, life science, and physical science researchers.

Doty’s background in science research as well as his interest in scholarly communication in the sciences influenced the topic of his paper. He plans on pursuing further extensions of this paper. With Open Access being such a timely topic, we look forward to his future publications and contributions to the library and information science field.

2010 Annual Banquet

On Thursday, December 2nd, NCSLA hosted their Annual Banquet at the Rizzo Conference Center in Chapel Hill. The festivities kicked off at six o’clock with a social hour followed by an excellent dinner. The Board meeting following dinner highlighted the past year’s NCSLA sponsored events such as NCSLA Technology Round Table, Workplace Diversity 2.0, Professional Presence Workshop, Get Connected: Networking Event, Resume Review Workshops, and Student Networking Dinner. These workshops not only allowed librarians to interact with colleagues, but also gave them the opportunity to update their professional skills.

The meeting continued with the year-end award ceremony where NCSLA members were recognized for their accomplishments.

The Information Management Award was presented to Joanie and Andre Olivier of Iconitel Consulting Services, Inc. This award is given to an organization for its excellent support in serving a North Carolina special library.

The Horizon Award was presented to Jill Robinson Morris of NC Live. This award is given to a member who has demonstrated the promise of becoming an outstanding member of the library and information science profession.

The Meritorious Achievement Award was presented to Susan Forbes of the EPA-RTP Library, UNC SIS Contractor. This award is given to a chapter member who has made outstanding contributions to NCLSA and to the library and information science profession.

The NCSLA Chapter recognizes and thanks the award winners for their hard work and continued commitment to special libraries and the profession.

The banquet closed with the announcement of the newly elected leaders of the NCSLA board. Susan Forbes is the new President Elect and Jill Robinson Morris is the new 1st Year Director. Professional Presence Workshop

The Professional Presence Workshop took place on October 22nd at the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, NC. Kathy Schaftlein, Senior Learning & Development Manager from the Center for Creative Leadership, and Mike Crumpton, Assistant Dean for Administrative Services at the University Libraries of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, were the guest speakers. Unfortunately, the presenter from Nordstrom was unable to attend, but Schaftlein, Crumpton, and chapter members stepped in to fill this spot.

The presenters discussed the importance of having a professional presence. The impression we make on an employer or colleague will be reinforced through our actions and appearance. The presenters urged job seekers to pay attention to their professional presences in-person and online.
Here are some tips to improve your professional presence:

Resume/Cover letter
Your resume and cover letter should be accurate and professional. You should always double check for spelling errors before submitting your application. To your potential employer, the resume is a preview of your capabilities. Thus, you should be meticulous in your spelling, grammar, and format of your resume.

When you are filling out an application, be sure to research the company and the position. You can research the company by going to the company website, speaking to a representative, and reading news articles on the company. You can show your interest in the company by incorporating pieces of your research into your cover letter.

Background Checks:
You should be aware of your online presence and what it says about you. Are your LinkedIn and Facebook pages professional? If not, do you have a private profile?

When you choose your references, think about the kind of recommendation they will provide. Will it be positive? Negative? Vague?

The Interview:
When you are going to an interview, be sure to dress appropriately. For the interview, a suit for both male and females are appropriate. The presenters mentioned that your outfit should be moderate, not flashy. Navy or dark grey suits are good choices because black suits may seem too strong. If you have tattoos or piercings, it may be a good idea to cover them for the interview.

After the interview, be sure to send a thank you card to the hiring person or committee.

Starting a new job:
Find the more successful people within your organization and model yourself after them. Usually, but not always, these people are successful because they represent the ideals of the organization in the future.

Key Success Factors for your professional career:
Always try to learn and grow personally and professionally. Stay aware of your career interests and goals and find ways to achieve them. This may mean through innovative ways or handling multiple roles within the company.

Workplace 2.0: Capitalizing on Workplace Diversity

On October 12, NCSLA hosted the “Workplace 2.0: Capitalizing on Workplace Diversity” event at the Duke Conference Center at Perimeter One in Morrisville, NC. Guest speaker, Barbie Keiser, discussed the importance of diversity in everyone’s lives. Keiser is an Information Resources Management consultant from the Washington DC metro area. She has 25 years of experience in library administration and library education.

Keiser began the presentation with a discussion of the word “Diversity” and its importance in society, especially in the workplace. She explained that diversity can be differences in culture, demographics, or capital knowledge. To illustrate diversity in capital knowledge, Keiser used social networking as an example. There are people who use social networking everyday while others rarely, if ever, use it. Keiser suggested employers can close the knowledge gap by capturing knowledge. The military uses this technique to help with the transition between new and retiring employees.

Keiser suggested using diversity to foster innovation in the work place. With technology changing the way people work, Keiser encouraged participants to recognize diverse working styles in order to get people to work better together. She also encouraged the audience to get a better understanding of working with other cultures. In a diverse work environment, Keiser stressed the importance of learning the different work styles, work ethics, and needs of employees.

The event was attended by seven NCSLA members who generated a great informal discussion about diversity in the workplace.

The Get Connected: Meet Your Local NC Library Associations

The Get Connected: Meet Your Local NC Library Associations event took place on Thursday, October 7, 2010, at the beautiful new South Regional Library in Durham. The North Carolina Special Libraries Association and the North Carolina Library Association- New Members Round Table sponsored this free event. Attendees had the opportunity to meet with association representatives and learn more about the North Carolina library associations as well as the Special Libraries Association and the American Libraries Association. Sixteen NCLA and NCSLA representatives spoke with twenty-five participants about their leadership roles in library associations. The participants ranged from MLS students to new or newly relocated professionals. Dave Trudeau, Library Director at Vance-Granville Community College, won a $25 gas card. A networking dinner at California Pizza Kitchen at Southpoint Mall followed the event with twenty-two people participating.

The NCSLA Technology Round Table

The NCSLA Technology Round Table was great event! On Friday, September 17, 2010 the chapter held the event at the US Environmental Protection Agency in Research Triangle Park (RTP), where NCSLA President Elect and Direct of the EPA-RTP Library Tamika Barnes provided an introduction and overview of the program. There were eight tables of which covered topics concerning OverDrive e-book service, Kindle Service, SharePoint, Data visualization tools, Instructional Tools (i.e. Poll Everywhere), Libraryh3lp, Social media tools to promote collections, and Collaboration tools (i.e. DimDim and Elluminate).

The topic representatives were genially knowledgeable about their subject matters and provided some really useful material around best practices and site references. There were over 50 members of NCSLA and NCLA in attendance. Each presenter had about 15 minutes to talk about their topic and thereafter, members rotated to the next table.

At the end of the day, Tamkia Barnes and Susan Forbes gave tours of the EPA library.

A very special thanks goes to all the presenters:

NCSLA Announces $1000 Paper Award - Sara Aull Paper Competition

SARA AULL STUDENT PAPER AWARD – FALL 2010

Each year the North Carolina Chapter of the Special Libraries Association (NCSLA) sponsors the Sara Aull Student Paper Award. This competition recognizes the best student paper of publishable quality relating to special libraries. The winner of the Sara Aull Student Paper Award receives the following:

A $1000 cash prize, to be presented at the NCSLA annual banquet Dec. 2, 2010 at the Rizzo Center in Chapel Hill

An abstract of his/her paper published on the NCSLA Web site and distributed through NCSLA Communicates!, the Chapter newsletter.

COMPETITION GUIDELINES

You must either be currently enrolled in a Master of Library Science or Master of Information Science program within the State of North Carolina – OR – have graduated from such a program within 12 months prior to the submission deadline.
The paper should be 5,000 words or less. (In some cases exceptions can be made for longer papers, if given prior permission by the award committee.) It should not have been previously published, nor should it be currently under consideration for publication.
The paper will be judged on originality, professional significance, clarity of expression, and relevance to the field of special librarianship.
The award will be presented at the NCSLA Annual Banquet

Notes about the Leadership Summit & NCSLA direction for 2010

Hi everyone,

As many of you know this year’s SLA leadership Summit took place from January 26th through the 30th in St Louis, MO. At the summit, the leadership of SLA discussed the outcome of the SLA name change results and the plans to keep members involved in the next wave of changes to come. They also talked about civility and how we should conduct ourselves during the process of proposed changes. SLA leaders are aware that how we identify the association does have a direct correlation with how some view their roles and responsibility in the profession. In regards to identity, any changes proposed to the association requires that much more care because there is an emotional attachment to defining who we are as librarians and information professionals. Overall, the sentiment of the SLA board was while the associations name will not change, there is still a clear urgency to utilize the data from the research that was done and there is still a need to change the perception of how non-members view SLA.

One of the next initiatives that you will hear or read about sometime this year is the redefining of the SLA’s mission and vision statements. SLA leadership wants to ensure that every member has an opportunity to provide input on these statements. The leadership of each chapter will likely be expected to gather feedback in a variety of formats concerning “draft” statements.

For me the summit was a successful meeting and the networking always helps to rekindle growing relationships with other leaders in other chapters across the country and throughout the world. While at the summit, I was invite to a small private meeting hosted by the new SLA President Elect, Cindy Romaine to brainstorm on ideas for the future direction of SLA. I made it clear that I believe communication and presentation through our website(s) are key elements to helping change the way audiences outside of our profession identify with SLA.

As for direction of the North Carolina chapter of SLA, moving forward we will focus on providing events and meetings that will grow new members and retain current membership. Our workshops will foster professional career development and knowledge sharing through technical collaborative online applications. As always, sponsorship at each event will be pivotal for our chapter to thrive.

To all members of NCSLA, I wish you a happy and prosperous 2010. I look forward to seeing many of you during our events throughout the year.

C. Vinson: Winner - 2009 Sara Aull Student Paper Award

In December 2009, NCSLA announced the winner of the 2009 Sara Aull Paper Award at their Annual Banquet.

The Sara Aull Paper Award is awarded annually to recognize the best student paper of publishable quality relating to special libraries. The winner of the Sara Aull Student Paper Award receives the following:

A $1000 cash prize, to be presented at the NCSLA annual banquet Dec. 3, 2009 at Biaggi's in Cary, NC

An abstract of his/her paper published on the NCSLA Web site and distributed through NCSLA Communicates!, the Chapter newsletter.

This year's winner is C. Vinson, a graduate student in the Library Science program at UNC-Greensboro.

Vinson's paper, titled: Social Tagging for Special Libraries, received the award based on the following criteria:

Originality
Relevance to the field of special librarianship
Usefulness of the topic to special libraries
Professionalism of presentation
Research and support
Clarity of expression
Overall quality of the paper, publishable on the NCSLA website

Here is an abstract of this year's winning paper:

“Social tagging" allows users to apply their own metadata, words or phrases, to a collection of photos, websites, scientific articles, books, or other items.Unlike traditional library subject headings, social tags tend to have a flat structure with multiple tags for the same concept or multiple concepts in the same tag, better resembling natural rather than formal categories. They inherit their structure directly from users rather than through catalogers as intermediaries, a feature of interest to libraries dealing with specialized audiences and collections. Studies of social tagging in practice indicate that under optimal conditions it can perform as well as traditional methods of information retrieval, but that more often that it performs worse; however, social tagging combined with other tools can perform better than either the other tools or social tagging can in isolation. Case studies for audiences similar to those of most special libraries suggest it may offer as much to them as to more generalized audiences. Research also indicates that the problem of user incentives is surmountable. The complexity of pricing and the diversity of options makes it impossible to answer in general whether social tagging is worth the investment, but promising early results suggest special libraries should consider exploring it.

COMPETITION GUIDELINES

You must either be currently enrolled in a Master of Library Science or Master of Information Science program within the State of North Carolina – OR – have graduated from such a program within 12 months prior to the submission deadline.
The paper should be 5,000 words or less. (In some cases exceptions can be made for longer papers if given prior permission by the award committee.) It should not have been previously published, nor should it be currently under consideration for publication.
The paper will be judged on originality, professional significance, clarity of expression, and relevance to the field of special librarianship.

The first board meeting of the new year will take place on Thursday, February 5, 2009, from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM EST at the NC Biotechnology Center in RTP. Post SLA 2009 Leadership Summit notes

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to give a few quick comments about the SLA 2009 Leadership Summit I attended in Savannah, GA this past week. It was truly a privilege to be there and I learned a great deal. As SLA celebrates its 100th year in existence, the conference theme focused on efforts to continue making SLA the best networking association possible for many years to come. The leadership of SLA has engaged in an alignment project which studies the library profession, seeking to bring cohesiveness of our positions, to express the core purpose of the vocation, and to enforce more effective communication about the value of SLA and those in the occupation.

I am inspired and I hope that I convey my excitement through the programs which we will develop in the coming year. I have had an opportunity to share and listen to both current and past presidents concerning best program practices. I look forward to implementing what I have learned and working with many of you during the coming year.

Stay tuned for the first board meeting of the year which we will announce in the coming weeks.

GAYE COLVIN WINS THE 2008 SARA AULL AWARD

The Sara Aull Award recognizes the best student paper of publishable quality relating to special libraries. Papers are judged on
originality, professional significance, clarity of expression, and relevance to the field of special librarianship. The winner receives a $1000 cash prize and publication on the NCSLA website.

At our December 4th banquet Jill Robinson, NCSLA Student Relations Chair, presented this award to Gaye Colvin, a UNC-G student living and working in Asheville. She is the ORPCE Logistics Coordinator & FM Grants/Research Coordinator at the Mountain Area Health Education Center in Asheville. Her paper reports on a user survey and needs assessment in a digital health care library.

NEIGHBORHOOD NETWORKING DINNERS

In February, four “neighborhoods” gathered for networking events. Unfortunately, the Raleigh event was postponed due to too much flu! Charlotte members are considering a networking event later in the year. Here are summaries of the four who met in February.

Chapel Hill: On Thursday, February 21, April Errickson and Debbie Balsamo hosted the Chapel Hill Networking Dinner at the Mediterranean Deli on Franklin Street. The event was attended by 19 people and included many students, including some first semester students and the current President of the UNC's Student SLA Chapter. There was lively discussion as the students shared their plans for the future and heard veteran SLA'ers talk about their experiences.

Durham: On the evening of Tuesday, February 19, Rebecca B. Vargha hosted the Durham Networking Dinner at City Beverage in Durham. There were 17 people present including members, student members, guests and faculty from both UNC-Chapel Hill & North Carolina Central University. The conversation topics ranged from career plans to an overview of current SLA initiatives such the Alignment Project and the Centennial Celebration. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect and meet new colleagues in an informal setting.
RTP: Diana Chilke, Jen Stringer, and Erin Knight hosted the RTP Networking Breakfast at the Radisson Research Triangle Park on Tuesday, February 26th. Fourteen members and guests gathered to enjoy a delicious buffet breakfast and the opportunity to chat and catch up with friends and colleagues.

Triad: Nine Triad area members gathered for a potluck dinner at the home of Mary Schwartz on Friday, February 22nd. Librarians came from Greensboro and Winston-Salem. Students came from UNC-CH and UNC-G. All enjoyed good food, wine, and conversation around the dining table.

Historic Castle McCulloch in Jamestown, NC was the site for our Annual Awards Banquet on April 22nd. (Click here for pictures). What a fitting site to be reminded of the noble past and exciting future of our profession!

Ann Stringfield received the Meritorious Achievement Award for her notable and enduring contributions to the chapter and to the profession. Dav Robertson remembered Ann’s many contributions to the chapter. Larry Skladanowski remarked on Ann’s professionalism at Lorillard and her service to NC libraries through Infocrofters.

Jamal Cromity received the Horizon Award as a relatively new chapter member who, through work and professional activities, shows promise of becoming an outstanding member of the profession. Debbie Balsamo and Barb LeBlanc noted Jamal’s newly-revised, more appealing and user-friendly chapter website. Although Jamal couldn’t be there to accept his award in person, he sent his thanks.

Guy St. Clair reminded us that special librarians have always been the gatekeepers of our organizations’ knowledge and the importance of growing our impact in this arena. He suggested that we value our “idea people” even when the avalanche of new ideas feels overwhelming; collaborate throughout our organizations, especially with IT; communicate upward; and get familiar with Web 2.0 technologies.

IMPROV CLASS

On April 3rd, 16 members enjoyed the improv class taught by actor and trainer Greg Hohn. We did five activities: Swapping Corners, Mirror Movement, Rip Van Winkle, Talk Show Guests, and Smith & Sir. After the experience and debriefing, these were the lessons learned by the group:
· Be in the moment
· Trust yourself
· What does confidence look like? Me
· Function outside of a plan
· Give it the gas!
· Focus on your audience
· Practice in a safe place
· Status vs. power
· Task is the same regardless of the audience
· Play a role when stepping outside comfort zone

Applied Improv is a curriculum designed for soft skills and leadership development.
